Expansion works make Victorias shopping centres biggest in nation

Victoria’s Malvern and Prahran residents could be on the doorstep of one of the country’s largest shopping centres if a $500 million planned expansion at Westfield Doncaster gets the go ahead.

The expansion of the centre would highlight Melbourne’s supremacy in retail developments and give it five of Australia’s biggest shopping centres, according to Executive Director of the Australian Retail Association Russell Zimmerman.

He said that currently, the 190,000sqm Chadstone Shopping Centre was the country’s largest, followed closely by Westfield Fountain Gate in Narre Warren at 177,000sqm and New South Wales-based Westfield Sydney at 153,000sqm.

Expansion plans for Wantirna South’s Westfield Knox will boost its retail space to 188,500sqm and place it in second position on the list, while plans announced recently by GPT Group management, to expand Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong to 185,000sqm, would give Victoria the four top spots in terms of size. At 150,000sqm, Westfield Doncaster would assume sixth place.

Natalie Greening, of the GPT Group, said strong population growth was the catalyst behind the expansion of many of Melbourne’s metropolitan shopping centres, including the Eastland Shopping Centre which was recently redeveloped to accommodate in excess of 460 outlets ranging from Print shops to major supermarkets and department stores.

Although covering only 131,000sqm, Highpoint excels in retail sales and enjoyed the patronage of over 15 million visitors last year.

According to Shopping Centre News, an industry publication, Chadstone topped the turnover figures with $145 billion last year.
