Dance fans in the Prahran area, particularly those interested in cultural heritage, may wish to partake in a workshop taught in the Reda Style by an acclaimed dancer.
Reda Style is named after Mahmoud Reda, an Olympic gymnast who was also an Egyptian choreographer and dancer. Along with his brother Ali and dance partner Farida Fahmy, he formed the Reda Troupe in 1959, combining Egyptian folk dances with more Western-style ballet.
The troupe gained popularity after appearing in several films, and were seen by many as a national treasure.
Melissa Cristina, who will be running the workshop, has trained with Mahmoud Reda, Farida Fahmy and many of the original Reda Troupe, and is keen to share her knowledge with attendees. Those joining the event will begin by learning flow techniques and combinations in the style of Reda. Then, there will be instruction to help learn a routine to the classic Lama Bada Yatathana song.
The workshop is restricted to fourteen spaces, so that all candidates can have quality tuition. Often, potential candidates for dance workshops may find advertisements as a result of local brochure printing.
Reda Style with Melissa Cristina will be taking place on Sunday, April 28, from 12.30pm until 2.30pm. The location is the Coco Ella Studio, Level 1, 225 Chapel Street, Prahran.
The cost of a ticket is $85, and the event is suitable for all levels of experience.
