Around 100 homeowners in Prahan, Victoria, and surrounding areas are being offered an opportunity to have a free home energy assessment.

The service is an initiative of the City of Stonnington as part of the council’s Sustainability Outreach Program, and was introduced to show people how to lower their energy use.

The one-hour assessments will be carried out by sustainability and energy experts from community service organisation Positive Charge, who will give families a solar PV assessment, action plan for a smarter home, energy bill analysis, and a walk-through of their home.

City Mayor Cr Adrian Stubbs said the program would be a great way for local families to learn how to live comfortably and sustainably while, at the same time, saving money.

He said people were always looking for ways of cutting costs and becoming more energy-efficient, and this latest program would point them in the right direction with trained experts identifying opportunities in individual homes and providing recommendations towards improving their energy usage.

Lists of solar company options produced by brochure printers for letterbox drops has led to too much variety in the marketplace, all of which can be discussed with the energy experts during the assessments.

Each assessment is valued at $250 and could effectively help families save around $1,000 annually on energy bills.

Cr Stubbs said the 100 free in-home energy assessments would be snapped up quickly, and he urged homeowners to act now to secure an appointment.

The deadline for bookings is October 31st.
