The company responsible for completing the $60 million Prahran Square project has recently won the award for Excellence in Civil Construction at the Master Builders 2020 Excellence in Construction Awards.

Prahran Square, which was the biggest construction project ever undertaken in the city, took Kane Constructions almost two years to finish. The project required the former Cato Street parking area to be completely transformed into about 10,000sqm of multi-faceted urban parkland, immediately atop 500 parking spaces for vehicles underground.

As a result of the work, the area has successfully experienced a 20 percent increase in parking capacity and has seen what was previously a dusty and hot bitumen car park converted into an inviting and green space.

The park, the design for which was created by ASPECT Studios and Lyons Architects, features nine separate areas set around a fountain and central square. There is plenty of seating, an array of trees and plans, a large lawn area, quality amenities, play equipment and an opportunity for visitors to experience immersive public art.

The square's innovative design also incorporated ecologically sensitive attributes and building design best practices, as well as stormwater management and capture and the generation of solar energy.

Key attractions such as Prahran Square, which opened in 2019 and offers a great place to gather, meet and relax, have often been featured in brochure printing campaigns promoting the area. The square has become a much-enjoyed green link between Princes Garden and Grattan Gardens.
