Community safety to benefit from boost in CCTV camera coverage

Toorak Village, which services residents throughout the City of Stonnington including Prahran, Victoria, has broadened its CCTV system.

The move which was undertaken by Council and the Victoria Police with the backing of the Stonnington Concerned Citizens Association, was taken to improve security.

Toorak Village’s CCTV system now extends to five sites, increasing surveillance along Wallace Avenue, Jackson Street, and Toorak Road.

Increased surveillance of the popular and well-established dining and retail precinct, which has been featured many times on Calendars and in newsletter printing, has been welcomed by Councillor John Chandler.

He said such innovations helped create a safer environment for the community, including visitors, students, shoppers, property owners and residents.

Cr. Chandler explained that footage is transmitted wirelessly by the cameras and then relayed back to the Prahran Police Station control room, where ongoing monitoring of all activity can take place.

The footage would also be able to be reviewed in the case of an incident, which could lead to easy identification of any suspects.

Cr. Chandler said both perceived and real safety issues could be addressed due to the presence of the CCTV cameras. He added that they also assisted police to adequately deploy law enforcement resources where needed.

Launched recently, the new cameras bring the number of CCTV cameras in use in public places throughout the City of Stonnington up to 15.
