Chance to tour premier food market

Melbourne's Prahran Market is recognised by many as the city’s oldest market. With a history spanning 150 years, the market has undergone many changes over the decades, always remaining relevant to shoppers and traders of the time, and a special tour is set to take place in February.

The council initially set up the market in 1864 so the municipality would have a central area for local growers to sell or barter their produce, and in 1891, the market moved to the current location on Commercial Road. Throughout the years, the market has grown and prospered. The influx of migrants from European countries in the 1960s had a significant influence on the type of produce supplied, as Melburnians embraced the multicultural influences on the city.

One of the latest innovations for the market is the Prahran Market Discovery Trail, which enables participants to learn about new delicacies and rare cuisine. During the tour, shoppers can sample fresh foods and produce and learn more about preparation and presentation.

The Prahran Market Discovery Trail tours occur on the third Saturday of each month, running from 9.45 am to 11 am. The tour includes a personal guide, tastings, free coffee, a reusable shopping bag and heaps of information about the market. Promotional Products are often distributed at events like this.

Bookings are essential and can be made on the Try Booking website. The next Prahran Market Discovery Trail will take place on Saturday, 19th February.
