Safety precautions in Chapel Street, Prahran, have been boosted with the recent installation of five new safety cameras to the CCTV network. This brings the number of surveillance cameras in the precinct to 15.
Funding for the project was, in part, provided by the Federal Government’s Safer Streets Programme.
According to a Stonnington Council spokesman, Chapel Street was on a list of locations identified by Council and local police as most in need of additional surveillance.
He said other locations included the corner of Commercial Road and Grattan Street in Prahran, corner of Chapel Street and Toorak Road in South Yarra, opposite South Yarra Station, and the corner of Punt and Toorak roads in South Yarra.
The latest addition to the CCTV network has boosted the coverage area, which also includes Greville Street, Commercial Road and Cato Street car park.
Barry Lane and Barry Street are monitored by a stand-alone system.
Community newsletter printing has often drawn attention to the safety issues of the district, and the spokesman said the expansion of CCTV coverage aims to address the situation by discouraging vandalism, crime and antisocial behaviour.
He added the CCTV system assists police in recognising and attending to unlawful or criminal activity.
Footage from the cameras is transmitted directly to the police station in Prahran, which allows them to monitor and review it when seeking to identify suspects.
