Prahran Mission and HomeGround Services are currently combining forces to host the Home Truths Art Exhibition in Chapel St, Prahran. The exhibition is unique in focusing on the perspectives of artists who are homeless or have been homeless for extended periods in the past.

The folk at Prahran Mission hope that hosting the event will encourage a celebration of art and, even more importantly, educate about the importance of having a stable and secure residence to call home, with this message extending towards the artists themselves. The works of more than 30 artists on display gives a firsthand glimpse into their life experiences.

Darryl Whittington, formerly homeless and now living at HomeGround’s residential building in North Melbourne, said:

“I’m an emotional person. I’m up and down all the time. Whenever I’m down I can start drawing and feel better. It feels excellent to see my art on the wall and have people say they like it.”

Acting chief executive of HomeGround, Heather Holst, believes the exhibition will challenge stereotypes and assist others to comprehend what homelessness is really like, while fostering an appreciation for the artists themselves as worthy members of the local community. Proceeds of the sales go to the artists themselves, providing much needed confidence as a springboard toward further artistic aspirations.

Running until November 2 at the Mission Café, local Print companies are perfectly placed to transform the works into postcard and poster printing opportunities for the benefit of the artists, as well as the local community.
