Annual gardening festival to help planting knowledge grow

Prahran’s Victorian Gardens will be host to this year’s Spring Into Gardening Festival.

The event, which traditionally attracts an estimated 5,000 sustainability and gardening enthusiasts, will this year be hosted by television personality and landscape architect Costa Georgiadis of the ABC’s Gardening Australia programme.

Organised by Stonnington Council, the festival will feature workshops, practical demonstrations, free expert talks, kids’ activities, and market stalls.

A Council spokesman said attendees will find out all they want to know about getting started with their planting, as well as preparing gardens for the summer months ahead.

He said there will be something for everyone, including novices and experienced gardeners, with events such as a Question and Answer session on ‘Composting with Costa’, and My Green Garden’s preserves workshop.

Backyard Honey will also present a special session on keeping backyard bees.

Festival patrons will also be able to benefit from topical booklet printing and Catalogues of gardening tips available from various stands and demonstrations, including the planting of ecologically sustainable roof gardens and green walls.

According to the spokesman, children have also been catered for with a range of activities set down for their enjoyment.

These, he said, will include a gardening workshop aimed at absolute beginners and children, where participants will take home instructions and a planted seed to nurture.

The Spring Into Gardening Festival will be held on October 9, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Victoria Gardens in High Street, Prahran.
