A new secondary school has been earmarked for Prahran, Victoria.

James Merlino, Minister for Education, said negotiations were underway to secure the former Prahran campus site of the Swinburne University of Technology, located in St. Kilda Road.

He said feasibility studies and planning for the educational facility had also begun.

Swinburne University's Professor Linda Kristjanson welcomed the latest announcement by the Victorian Government that the former Prahran campus was considered the preferred site for the school.

She said the site had been an important educational precinct in Prahran for a long time, and this tradition would continue with the establishment of a new secondary school.

According to Professor Kristjanson, the site hosts about 5,500sqm of area within a six-storey building, and a substantial area for car parking.

She added that there was also great redevelopment potential to create a modern, well-equipped inner-city secondary facility that would service the local community for many years to come.

Currently, the Prahran site is used by the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) and Melbourne Polytechnic.

NICA Executive Director Rose Stephens said locating a secondary school within the creative educational precinct would complement the facilities and services offered by their own national arts training institute.

Media reports and flyer printing are expected to keep community members updated on the secondary school's progress.
