Essendon residents are being invited to learn more about people with disabilities next month, as Moonee Valley City Council is organising a series of events to celebrate International Day of People with Disability.
The mayor, Councillor Narelle Sharpe – who is also the council’s family, aged, disability and youth portfolio holder – said the council had made much progress in disability services during the past year.
The local authority had signed off on its Disability Action Plan and hosted a disability housing forum.
The activities planned for December are aimed at celebrating inclusiveness and encouraging positive action. On Thursday, December 4th, an expo will be held to promote services that help people with disabilities access education, employment and volunteer programmes.
There will be workshops and talks during the event, and printing services will no doubt have been used to create information leaflets for people to take home.
On Saturday, December 6th, Essendon Hockey Club is hosting a special session for people of all abilities to try the sport and, on Friday, December 12th, families can enjoy an outdoor screening of The Lego Movie in Queens Park. Councillor Sharpe said the movie was chosen as it appeals to all generations and tells a story of overcoming problems no matter what their background.
International Day of People with Disability is marked on Wednesday, December 3rd. To book any of the events, contact the Moonee Valley City Council.
