Those living in or near Essendon can book on to one of two vintage steam engines that will be pulling heritage wooden rattler carriages, each over 100 years old.
The steam engines will be embarking on a 50-minute journey, from Essendon Station to Flinders Street in Melbourne CBD, and back again, using the Craigieburn Line.
The carriages have opening windows, Edwardian pressed tin ceilings and seats in wood-panelled compartments. While travelling, those onboard will cross the viaducts between Flinders Street Station and Southern Cross and will also be able to see the Yarra River.
The event is organised by Steamrail Victoria, which is an organisation run by volunteers and is involved with the operation and restoration of historic railway vehicles. Steamrail Victoria has been in existence for around 60 years, and started its life as the Steam Preservation Co-ordination Committee. Since then, a few steam locomotives have been restored from the Newport Railway Workshops, and eight of these are now back in service, with as many again stored, awaiting restoration or as a source for parts.
Volunteer organisations may sell Promotional Products such as Mugs, keyrings and Calendars in order to help raise much-needed funds.
