Opportunity for Essendon residents to support cancer research

Essendon residents looking for a challenge this year can consider signing up for the Cancer Council's Relay for Life, which takes place in nearby Moonee Ponds in March.

The annual event raises money for the Cancer Council and helps to fund things including research, detection and prevention programmes and support for cancer patients.

This year will be the 15th time the relay has been run in Moonee Ponds. Last time, more than 1,200 people took part, raising nearly $200,000.

During the event, teams of up to 15 people walk or run around a track keeping a baton moving throughout the day and night. As usual, the first lap of this year's relay will be dedicated to cancer survivors, those currently undergoing treatment and people who have cared for cancer patients. This starting lap is open to anyone; even those not taking part in the full event. A candlelight ceremony will also be held to remember lost loved ones.

As well as paying a registration fee, participants are asked to raise extra money for the cause. Essendon residents who want to take on the challenge could think about flyer printing as a way of letting friends and neighbours know they are taking part, or poster printing to advertise a special fundraising event.

The 2014 relay takes place at Aberfeldie Athletics Track. It starts at 6:00 pm on Friday, March 28 and finishes at 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 29. To register a team, or join an existing team, visit the Relay for Life website
