Moonee Valley heritage to be celebrated across the region

Essendon and the suburbs across Moonee Valley will be celebrating the area’s heritage with new plaques recognising the land's traditional custodians being unveiled by the council.

Moonee Valley City Council has installed plaques at special buildings around the region to recognise the importance of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and to develop stronger relationships between those groups and residents.

Moonee Valley Mayor Councillor Andrea Surace said the council had worked closely with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to create the plaques to pay respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, who are recognised as the traditional custodians of the land around Moonee Valley.

The plaques, which include a drawing from Wurundjeri artist Judy Nicholson, have been erected in council buildings, including libraries and community centres, and decals have been put in the windows of the Clocktower Centre and Incinerator Gallery.

Printing services have also been used to create stickers with the same design as the plaques. Local businesses and residents are being encouraged to display these in their homes or business premises.

The launch of the plaques comes at the same time as an update to the Council’s Reconciliation Policy, which sets out ways to strengthen ties to the Aboriginal community.

Essendon residents or companies who would like to order stickers should contact Moonee Valley City Council’s Social Planning and Wellbeing team.
