Moonee Valley gearing up for Relay for Life
People from Moonee Ponds, Essendon and nearby suburbs are planning a Relay for Life to be run in February.
Relay for Life aims to be a fun event that celebrates cancer survivors in the local community and recognises the role of family, friends and carers in a patient’s journey. Since its inception in America in 1985, Relay for Life has become the world’s biggest anti-cancer fundraising event. In Australia, Relay for Life has raised over $137 million. Funds raised go to support the Cancer Council’s research, support and prevention programs.
Teams of participants get together to walk throughout the night and raise money by organising fundraising events, seeking sponsorship and donations. Teams can be made up of family members and friends, workmates, sports teams or any group of people keen to raise funds. Team names and dress-ups are often part of the fun. Organisers of events such as this often use banner printing to raise awareness in the community.
People wishing to be involved but not join a team can volunteer to help in the planning stages, with activities such as marketing, or logistics. On the day, volunteers are needed for catering, waste management, first aid and entertainment.
Moonee Valley Relay for life will take place at the Aberfeldie Athletics Track, Corio Street, Moonee Ponds from 7pm on Friday 15th February to midday on Saturday 16th.
