What's Happening in Essendon, VIC…

Families urged to join Walk to School

Essendon, Victoria’s primary school students are being urged to take part in a statewide initiative to walk, scoot, or cycle to school during October.

VicHealth stages the Walk to School Month annually with the aim of getting families to experience first-hand the benefits of getting together and walking to school.

Moonee Valley City Council Mayor Andrea Surace said the exercise also provided an ideal opportunity for children to develop healthy habits that could last a lifetime, as well as use the walk to school as a time to share and talk with family members, and also to learn more about their own neighbourhood. She said:

“It’s also a great way to reduce traffic congestion, parking stress and the associated environmental impacts of driving.

“If you can’t walk all the way, park the car at one of the Park and Walk locations in the area and walk, cycle or scoot the rest of the way.”

The Mayor said a VicHealth grant for $10,000 will enable council to provide flyer printing, prizes and varied activities for participating schools.

There will also be a $150 sports store voucher for the child that creates the winning design in the Poster Challenge.

According to the Mayor, 6,500 students from 20 primary schools throughout the city are set to take part in the Walk to School Month event this year and, he added, there is still time to register.
