Essendon residents invited to return to school this month

Former staff and students from Essendon Keilor College are being invited to join celebrations for the school’s Essendon Campus centenary this month.

The school opened as Essendon Higher Elementary School in February 1913 and at the time had just over 400 students and just 17 teachers. A year later, it was renamed Essendon High School and in 1993, the school was merged with four others in the area to become Essendon Keilor College.

Many of the original buildings remain today, although part of the original school was destroyed by fire in 1978.

A number of events have been organised to mark the centenary. These include a gala cocktail party held at Flemington racecourse on Friday March 15th and a production by current students called ‘High School, My School’, which will explore the history of the school, will be performed in the evening on Friday March 22nd and in the afternoon and evening on Saturday March 23rd.

On Sunday March 24th, an open day will give current and past students and staff the chance to look around the site and take a trip down memory lane with a display of memorabilia.

Printing services have been used to create a history of the school, which is available to purchase along with other merchandise. Well-wishers can also purchase engraved bricks, which will be used to repave the quadrangle, or contribute to a scholarship or the building and library funds.

For more information, or to book tickets to any of the events, contact the school or visit the school website.
