Essendon cricketer given opportunity with Big Bash team

Essendon sports fans will have a good reason for supporting the Melbourne Renegades cricket team this season, with the addition of local player Solomon Mire to the squad.

Mire, who plays as a middle order batsman with the Essendon Bombers, has been chosen by the Renegades as their community rookie for the 2013-14 season. The community player scheme is a new initiative set up by Cricket Australia to offer opportunities to those who do not have access to one of other recognised cricket development pathways.

Mire will train alongside the Renegades T20 squad for the Big Bash League which starts next month, but will still need to prove his worth to the club. However, Renegades coach Simon Helmot said the player had showed good promise:

"He's a multiskilled player, hard-hitting top-order batsman, can bowl and is excellent in the field.

"From a skills point of view, he fitted the mould as well."

Mire will certainly have some skilled players to learn from with Australian test bowlers Peter Siddle and James Pattison both in the team. Top Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan also plays for the Renegades and is widely regarded as one of the best cricketers in the world.

Local fans can cheer on the team in their opening match against the Melbourne Stars on Friday December 20 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Banner printing is a great way to show support whether it is for local man Mire or any of the other players. For tickets to any of the Renegades’ Big Bash games, visit the club website.
