Essendon aviation buffs to celebrate airfield centenary

Aviation enthusiasts and history buffs throughout Essendon are being invited to come and help mark Essendon Fields’ belated centenary celebrations.

Having officially marked its 100th year of operation in 2021, plans to celebrate the historic milestone had to be put on hold due to coronavirus restrictions. Now, the beloved local airfield, which served as Melbourne’s first airport, is opening itself up to the public with a range of aircraft displays, virtual reality flight simulators and helicopter joy flights. A special walking tour will also allow guests to check out their field original hangers and air traffic control systems.

Some of the unique aircraft on display will include fighter jets, medical aircraft, luxury private planes and the Victorian Police Air Wing fleet. In addition to all the aeronautical focused displays, attendees will also be treated to a display of classic cars, including a selection from Lindsay Fox’s Classic Car Museum. Food trucks and gourmet samples will also be available to tempt the tastebuds.

Community open days and festivals such as this can benefit from flyer printing to help raise awareness of the event throughout the local community.

Free for the entire family, the Essendon Fields’ 100th anniversary celebration is planned to take place on Sunday, March 27 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. More information is available from the Essendon Fields website.
