Community hub a step closer

Progress on the new $20 million Flemington Community Hub, which will service a wide area including nearby Essendon, is now in the hands of Moonee Valley Council following the unanimous decision by councillors recently to use council-owned land as the site.

In a video update on the project, a council spokesperson said time was of the essence and added:

"We obviously have really tight time-frames that we want to work towards because we really want the new hub built by 2023 and for us to ensure that is done we need to manage and move ahead with the project."

The decision allows council to get on with the job, which initially involves enlisting the services of an architect to start work on the new hub's design. A graphic design of major projects such as this is also often created to provide visual clarity.

The project will replace the long established Debney's Park Sports Pavilion and Flemington Community Centre and will be located on the adjacent council-owned land and not on the Department of Housing and Human Services' housing estate as previously considered.

Expected to be completed and operational by 2023, the new hub's many features are to include a community hall, a range of multi-purpose facility rooms, exhibition space, kitchen, training rooms, offices, storage spaces, dedicated spaces for children and consultation suites.

The hub will also incorporate sports pavilion spaces to service the two outdoor fields at Debney Park, according to the spokesperson.
