City to trial free Wi-Fi to help boost business
Free public Wi-Fi is to be trialled throughout the City of Moonee Valley, including Essendon.
Innovative cloud-based technologies have made it possible for Council to offer local shoppers free Wi-Fi, according to Mayor John Sipek.
The move, he said, represents a positive way to help local traders while also encouraging people within the community to spend their shopping dollars locally.
The Mayor said:
“Local businesses are at the heart and soul of our community. We are proud to support them by helping make our activity centres appealing places to shop, dine and recreate.”
Cr. Richard Lawrence, who holds Council’s Business Promotion Portfolio, is enthuastic about the impact the trial will have across the local area. He said:
“If we want our local shopping strips to be competitive, at the very least it’s worth trialling to see if there is an appetite for free Wi-Fi, and to see if it has a positive impact on our local economy.”
However, Cr. Lawrence stresses that Wi-Fi is just the beginning. He believes there are still many possibilities on offer from cloud technologies for Council to investigate in the years ahead, including apps to assist in finding parking spaces and bin sensors that indicate their level of use.
Printing services and council websites are expected to be used to advise residents about which shopping centre area will host the area’s first trial.
