Work begins on oval and sporting venue upgrade

Mill Park Lakes Recreation Reserve is about to be upgraded and transformed.

Sports enthusiasts from Epping, South Morang and throughout the Whittlesea Council area are set to benefit from the $4m project, which will include the upgrade and extension of the pavilion.

A synthetic surface will also be introduced on the eastern oval as part of the redevelopment.

Mayor Stevan Kozmevski was excited about the project, which he said would also offer a new multipurpose area where community members could meet, a first-aid room, umpire change rooms, and new toilets and change rooms.

He added that a synthetic grass surface and drop-down cricket wicket would also be included in the redevelopment of the oval, and accredited to Cricket Australia and the Australian Football League.

The Mayor said the new facilities were greatly needed by the groups that use the venue regularly, including the South Morang football, cricket and netball clubs.

Banner printing for different events throughout the year reflects the variety of sports played on the grounds. According to the Mayor, this includes a football team for senior women that competes in the Victorian Women’s Football League, and four junior teams for girls.

He said the new development will rectify an urgent need for more facilities to cater for the number of women who participate in the sports played.

He said that by September, redevelopment of the oval should be finalised, with November the expected completion date for work on the pavilion.
