Safely dispose of household chemicals in Epping

Later this month, there will be an opportunity for those living in and around Epping to safely get rid of household chemicals that they may have been storing.

As explained by event organisers, household chemicals should never be thrown into domestic rubbish as they can leak, catch fire and mix with other chemicals, proving a hazard for waste collectors. They can also be problematic in collection trucks or at sorting facilities. Pouring items down a drain can also cause issues in the water supply, as well as cause harm to vegetation and wildlife.

Sustainability Victoria is offering a series of free Detox Your Home Events, where substances such as oven cleaner, weed killer and rat poison can be disposed of safely. The events are staffed by trained chemists and staff who will be able to answer any queries. They will unload cars, so all attending should stay in their vehicles.

Chemicals should be brought to the site in the original packaging where possible. If other packaging is used, it should be annotated with a permanent marker regarding the contents.

Useful community events like this one are often advertised by using flyer printing, and the materials produced can be delivered to local households.

Detox Your Home – Epping is taking place on Saturday, 31 January from 9 am until 3 pm. The venue is the Epping Works Depot, 68-96 Houston Street, Epping. Potential attendees should pre-register for the event, which is free to attend.
