Prepations needed ahead of fire season

People in the City of Whittlesea are being asked to prepare their properties before fire restrictions come into force.

The tightened regulations start around the first week in December and are usually in place until April or May. During this time, large fires are forbidden without a permit and special conditions have to be followed for smaller fires.

Municipal Fire Prevention Officer Pat Carra said bush fires and grass fires were very likely this summer because of high rainfall during spring and warmer temperatures.

City of Whittlesea Council staff have recently carried out inspections, and more than 1,000 ratepayers have been issued with instructions to get their properties prepared for the season. Those who do not comply could face fines of more than $1,000.

Mr Carra said:

“Despite warnings and devastating fires already occurring interstate it comes as a surprise that so many owners have such an ill-prepared property. It only takes two weeks of hot, dry and windy weather to create dangerous fire conditions.”

Epping residents can help prepare against fires by keeping grass short and creating fire breaks around the property. People who live close to large areas of empty land or parks should be especially prepared and should make sure they implement a Survival Plan.
