Exhibiton to commemorate decade since bushfires

A decade since the devastating fires of 2009 in Victoria is being marked with community events and a special art exhibition.

On display during February for visitors and residents from South Moran, Epping and throughout the City of Whittlesea, is a major exhibition entitled Reflections – Looking Forward, Looking Backward.

South Moran’s Great Hall is hosting the exhibition, which features art works created during the past decade by local artists, including some from the cultural collection of Council.

Also on display will be video, local poetry works and art created as part of community recovery projects since the fires 10 years ago. A sculpture of a tall tree Forms the centrepiece of the exhibition. It is described as ‘a tree of love’ and the feature was created from natural materials. Visitors are invited to write messages on fabric before weaving them into the trunk of the tree.

Another interactive activity is the opportunity for people to record personal reflections on handmade paper leaves in which yellow flowering plant seeds have been embedded.

The leaves are available at the exhibition and can be taken home and planted or, if preferred, left at the venue to form part of the tree sculpture during a special community event later in the month.

Museums, galleries and other venues that hold exhibitions such as this often promote them through a flyer printing campaign.

The Great Hall at South Moran will host the Reflections – Looking Forward, Looking Backward exhibition from 10am to 4pm, throughout February.
