Epping residents have the chance to reflect on Australia’s most devastating bushfire season, with a special exhibition marking the fifth anniversary of the 2009 fires.
The bushfires experienced by Victoria on and around February 7th, 2009 were the worst in the country’s history and the day itself has become known as Black Saturday.
To commemorate five years since the fires, which had an impact on many people around the City of Whittlesea, the city is holding an exhibition entitled Five Years On.
Printing services have been used to reproduce photographs from community art projects, which will be displayed alongside art, poetry, and mixed media installations. The community art projects have taken place over the last five years and have been designed to help people deal with the aftermath of the fires as well as share their experiences with others and learn new skills.
The exhibition will be on display throughout February, in the Great Hall in Ferres Boulevard, South Morang. City of Whittlesea mayor Councillor Mary Lalios, said the hall was a fitting home for the show, as it was used as a collection centre for community donations given to people affected by the disaster.
A special Remembrance Service will take place on Friday February 7th in the Whittlesea Community Garden. The service starts at 6.45pm, and people are invited to bring flowers and personal tributes.
