Bigger animal shelter to be built in Epping

A new centre for stray, lost and unwanted animals is set to be built in Epping to ensure the council can continue its responsibilities.

The facility will replace the current centre in O’Herns Road managed by the RSPCA, which has become too small to meet the council’s needs.

Up to 110 dogs and 150 cats can be housed at the new centre, which will also include outside exercise areas and a livestock compound, as well as a veterinary centre at which animals can be neutered.

The council is also reminding people to ensure their pets are registered and to renew their registration each April.

Registration means it is more likely the pet can be identified if it is lost. Pet owners could use flyer printing or poster printing if they lose their pet, as well as check to see if it has been impounded or found and taken to the shelter.

The new venue is a joint project between the City of Whittlesea, Darebin and Moreland City Councils, and will accept animals from all three areas.

The City of Whitehorse will contribute most of the money for the build, which is set to cost around $11m, and will oversee the design and construction.

Construction is due to begin in June this year and the shelter is scheduled to open in July 2017, with the management being tendered to an animal welfare service.
