Grants programme targets local jobseekers

An estimated 100 residents of Hume City, including Broadmeadows, are set to benefit from Hume Council's recent decision to continue its Business Employment Grants Programme.

The impact of COVID-19 on local businesses and residents has been great, according to Mayor of Hume City Joseph Haweil, who said the area's unemployment rate had hit 12.1 per cent and overtaken Greater Melbourne's rate of 5.5 per cent.

Haweil said local businesses and jobs would receive a financial boost from the grants programme, with the focus being on employment outcomes of up to and exceeding a year at the programme's end. The mayor added:

“We want businesses in Hume City to thrive and create local jobs for local people - indeed we have even enshrined this in our Council plan.”

The programme has been introduced to specifically benefit and target cadets, interns, apprentices, trainees and other jobseekers.

Grant funding will allow project framework to be developed that finds hidden training and employment opportunities, while also stimulating the local job market, according to the mayor.

Flyer printing campaigns and local media coverage often help to spread the word throughout the community about major grant programmes such as this, which can help jobseekers and local businesses.

Haweil said the programme also gives the council an opportunity to work alongside local businesses to help create tailored approaches in the area of training to meet recruitment needs. Submissions will be received from 5 November.
