Broadmeadows council pushes on with multi-level car park plans

Plans are advancing for the development of a multi-level car park in Broadmeadows.

An agreement has been reached between Hume Council and the Victorian state government over the proposal for the Camp Road loop site, with both the government and council signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The proposal to build a new multi-level car park on the land underneath the loop road was discussed several years ago, but failed to get the nod after VicRoads requested that council should pay $9 million for the land.

Chief executive officer of Hume council, Domenic Isola said council hoped the MOU would assist with the acquisition of the land, while Frank McGuire, the Broadmeadows MP, said the MOU would allow land in Hume Central to be unlocked for future development. Printing services may be used to create informative material on future local developments.

The proposal involves the removal of the loop road to create more car spaces closer to the train station. Motorists who need access to Johnstone Street from Pascoe Vale Road can use the alternative of Pearcedale Parade and Dimboola Road.

Mayor Carly Moore highlighted that the new proposal was part of the council’s vision for the central precinct of Hume, which council wants to transform by building commercial offices and apartments. She said such future projects would boost the local job market for many years to come.
