When Broadmeadows, Victoria, first welcomed European settlers in the 1840s, many were pastoralists. By the time the town was officially surveyed a decade later, Ardlie Street hosted most of the hustle and bustle of daily life. However, the establishment of a railway station two kilometres away eventually saw civic offices built near the train stop, together with the relocation of the town centre, which followed soon after, allowing industry to flourish.
