What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Australian urged to support firefighters

People from Broadmeadows and around the country are being urged to show their support for firefighters by flying a red balloon next month.

A campaign to thank firefighters for their work, especially during the recent bush fires, has been launched with the hope that people across Australia will fly a balloon on Friday February 28th.

The idea was sparked by a similar local initiative in Geelong called Red Balloon Week. Co-founder of the February campaign, Jodi Hardiman said she had been inspired by the Geelong event and felt everyone should have the chance to show their appreciation to current and former firefighters.

The end of February was chosen as it is the final day of summer and the official end of the fire risk season.

This year has already seen many devastating fires around the country with firefighters battling several blazes across Victoria after an extreme heatwave hit the region.

While people can fly any red balloon, printing services have been used to create an official balloon for the event with the words Thank You Fireys on them. Money raised from the sale of the printed balloons will be donated to the fire service local to where they are sold.

Posters are also available for people to print to help promote the event and the printed balloons can be bought in bulk for a discounted price for anyone who would like to resell them at an organised event to raise money for their local service.
