What's Happening in Abbotsford, VIC…

Young art lovers encouraged to attend new festival

Budding artists and designers can explore their creativity at a special children's event at the National Gallery of Victoria this month.

The gallery is holding its first Children's Festival as part of the Melbourne Now exhibition, which is currently running at the venue.

The exhibition, which is the largest ever staged by the gallery, celebrates architecture, design, art and culture from across the city. The show features established and emerging artists who work in Melbourne and includes art, installations and performance pieces.

A series of special events have been arranged during the festival allowing children from Abbotsford and around Melbourne to meet some of the artists featured in the exhibition and to get hands-on and express themselves.

A number of artists involved in the Melbourne Now show will give talks about their work, while gallery curators will lead tours of the exhibition aimed at younger visitors. There will also be a number of drawing and creative workshops including shoemaking and gardening, and the chance to enjoy music and theatre by performers such as the Australian Youth Choir.

Printing services have been used to create a number of books for the show, including an exhibition guide and a children's book offering inspiration for art projects to do at home.

The Children's Festival runs from Saturday, January 18 to Sunday, January 26th at the National Gallery's two venues in St Kilda Road and Federation Square. Events are free, but places at some are limited and need to be booked in advance. Melbourne Now runs until March.
