Yarra to introduce cashless parking meters
Parking metres across the City of Yarra, including Abbotsford, are about to become cashless.
As part of the move, which will take effect from November this year, all city parking meters will transition to only accept Pay Stay app and credit card payments, and no coins will be accepted.
A spokesperson for Yarra City Council said the latest technology smart meters are set to replace parking meters in some areas, while others will be modified to reflect the no coin concept.
He said there had been a dramatic decrease in cash payments for parking throughout the city, dropping from 17 per cent in 2019 to below seven per cent this year, adding:
He said that in recent years, the technology surrounding parking meters had also advanced significantly, with the advent of smart technology providing an easy and quick alternative via the use of the Pay Stay app or credit card.
Innovations such as the cashless parking meters often see professional printing services enlisted to update associated signage.
The spokesperson added that many faults that have occurred on parking meters have been linked with the coin mechanism and, as a result, the cashless meters are expected to reduce time and maintenance issues required to keep the meters operational.

"Going cashless makes sense. Paying for goods and services by card has become the norm, and many people choose not to carry cash at all. This trend was accelerated by the pandemic and is expected to continue."
