Skate park upgrade to begin in May

Abbotsford residents will be among many within Yarra City to benefit from a revamped skate park in Edinburgh Gardens, Fitzroy North.

Scheduled to begin in May, the upgrade work is being undertaken to make the facility more accessible, inclusive and welcoming to people of all skill levels.

Grind Projects – a specialist in creating safe, high-quality skate parks – has been appointed by the council to carry out the project.

The work will see the size of the facility doubled, and features incorporated to make it ideal for both advanced skateboarders and beginners. There will also be improved access for those who are wheelchair-based, together with increased seating for visitors and spectators, who will also benefit from extra shading.

Flyer printing campaigns have often been launched to keep local residents aware of upgrades such as those being undertaken at the skate park.

The final redevelopment design was the result of an in-depth consultation process conducted throughout the Yarra community. The council also worked closely with those within the sports of scooter riding, roller-skating, rollerblading, BMX riding and skating.

The venue, known as Fitzy Bowl, is among Melbourne's most popular of its type. It is also among the more challenging of the area's skate parks, but the revamp will ensure both beginners and experienced skaters will have an opportunity to use the facility regularly. This includes teenage, young and more mature skaters.
