Signage upgrade to dog-on-lead areas in parks

New signage in the form of footpath decals are set to be rolled out in three Yarra City parks near Abbotsford.

The Signs will indicate dog-on-lead areas within Darling Gardens, Edinburgh Gardens and Gahan Reserve.

A Yarra City spokesperson said there is no change to the dog-on-lead areas, but the council is keen to make it simpler for the wide range of park users, including sports groups, the general public and dog walkers to understand every aspect and enjoy their visits to local open spaces.

The spokesperson said the signage will make it very easy to identify off-lead areas, which are not available everywhere. Many parks, he said, are on-lead, but where off-lead is available, the Signs will make it very clear for dog owners. The council's website also lists specific parks where off-lead areas for dogs are available. He added:

"Yarra’s off-leash areas are still shared spaces with other park users and shouldn’t be considered ‘dog parks’ where dogs have free range."

In addition, the spokesperson said it is expected that dog owners will have effective and continuous control of their animals to ensure they do not interfere or disrupt other park users.

Professional printing services can prepare Signs like this, which will be clearly visible in parks offering off-lead areas.

The spokesperson issued a reminder to dog owners using off-lead areas to keep their pets from jumping on other people using the park, including children.
