New recycling machine for Clifton Hill

Yarra City Council has installed a new cardboard compactor at its Clifton Hill recycling depot, in a bid to cut down on cardboard litter in the area.

Authorities also hope the move will slash the number of trucks used to collect cardboard waste and increase recycling.

The compactor has been built especially to fit in the depot and was officially brought online at the end of March. It has been funded by the council, with help from Sustainability Victoria and the Australian Packaging Covenant.

The compactor makes it quicker and easier to prepare cardboard for recycling. Recycled paper products could be used by local businesses, including Print companies, for producing marketing material.

The council estimates that more than 6,000 tonnes of cardboard are collected each year, much of which could be used again as cardboard is easy to recycle due to the way it is processed.

Yarra City Mayor Councillor Phillip Vlahogiannis said the council was committed to reducing waste and helping the environment by promoting recycling.

Once the cardboard has been processed at the Clifton Hill depot it will be sent to Visy, an Australian firm that specialises in creating recycled products.

Used cardboard can currently be deposited at special bins around the municipality and in six trailers that are located are the city’s shopping strips. For more information about recycling, contact Yarra City Council.
