New app to streamline parking in Yarra City

A new smartphone PayStay app is about to make paying for parking in the City of Yarra much easier.

Clifton Hill residents will be among thousands to take advantage of the new system which will streamline parking to such an extent that people using the service will no longer have to pay for a full hour or two upfront when their stay is only a fraction of the time.

A Yarra Council spokesman said logging off when they leave the parking bay will ensure the amount charged will cease at that moment.

In addition, he said, the app also applies to the adjacent Melbourne City Council area enabling the same parking system to be used within both local government districts.

Signs have been erected to indicate the parking bays where the apps apply with more widespread coverage of the system expected to be operation within coming weeks.

The spokesman said the `Pay by Phone’ app used previously for parking payments will no longer be accepted by Council.

However, he said, coin payment in applicable parking meters will continue to be accepted.

The spokesman said the main aim of the paid parking bays is to achieve a regular and fairer turnover in regard to parking spaces.

He said to take full advantage of the free parking app, people can register at the PayStay website or download it onto Android or Apple devices for immediate access.
