Initiatives enacted to help local businesses recover

Community groups and businesses in Abbotsford and across the City of Yarra are being encouraged to apply for up to $320,000 in council grants for special projects that can help enhance, promote and activate precincts within the area.

This latest initiative, for which the second round of funding was announced recently, has been introduced to help attract increased visitor numbers and generate added activity following the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on local businesses.

According to Yarra News, the city's retail precincts, sole traders and businesses are the Yarra economy's lifeblood and are an essential part of its recovery.

The council is urging people to reacquaint themselves with the city's shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, which are iconic and something for which the area is well known.

Flyer printing campaigns have often helped to attract new customers to local outlets.

The Yarra News report said that in order to assist businesses in its recovery phase, it had also put together a team for rapid response, with the primary aim of assessing applications associated with the extension of dining permits outdoors, stating:

"We've created free, flexible and fast-tracked outdoor dining permits so that businesses in Yarra can welcome back customers as soon as it is safe to do so."

The initiative has also seen the council put a hold on fees for parking permits required by businesses, health and food registrations and trading permits on footpaths until March 31.
