Clifton Hill businesses, residents and community groups are joining forces with Yarra City Council in an effort to clean up local waterways.
The move follows Council’s success in gaining an $18,000 grant, announced recently by Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change.
Yarra City Mayor Cr Roberto Colanzi said the grant was awarded through the Litter Innovation Fund of Sustainability Victoria. He said it provides an ideal opportunity to make a real difference by spreading the word about the importance of cutting down the amount of litter that is ending up in local waterways and damaging the environment.
Mayor Colanzi said Council can assist by reaching out to businesses, schools and residents with Brochures, Flyers and other information that can help them make smart choices when it comes to waste.
He added that project partners include the CSIRO, Fairfield Canoe Club, Merri Creek Management Committee, Waterwatch Victoria, Collingwood Children’s Farm and the Melbourne Farmers Market.
The Yarra River and Merri Creek form two boundaries of the City of Yarra and each have adjoining open space reserves.
The Mayor said the waterway’s natural conservation and recreational values are highly regarded by residents and all initiatives to safeguard their future are considered extremely important.
This latest campaign, he said, will highlight the amount of litter flowing into the waterways, stimulate awareness of its harm to the environment, and put forward ways everyone can help reduce the output of litter.
