Future of Victoria Street sparks call for public consultation

Clifton Hill residents will be invited to join an important community discussion on the future vision for Victoria Street, Richmond.

The participation of local traders and residents is an initiative of Yarra City Council, representatives of which are keen to gauge a shared vision for the precinct, which has developed into a popular dining and shopping area.

Mayor Roberto Colanzi said Victoria Street had long been a bustling and vibrant precinct but challenges in the areas of community safety and public amenity were forever present.

He said Council aims to speak with service providers, Victoria Police, traders, residents, and others next year to exchange ideas and experiences with a view to developing a shared vision for the street in the years ahead.

The Mayor said discussions will focus on a number of topics., including the amenity and safety of the area, as well as practical and innovative ways to enhance Victoria Street.

He said that by reaching out to the community and seeking feedback, whether in the form of graphic designs or verbally, Council can take into account a much wider perspective when seeking solutions to the sector’s future.

People will be able provided with a number of options when taking part, including personally, online, via surveys, meetings and workshops.

March 2017 is the expected start date of the consultations, which will be part of Council’s Reimagining Victoria Street Community Engagement Project.
