Funding approved for new inner-city parks

Following research that shows Collingwood, a neighbouring suburb of Clifton Hill, has the lowest amount of open space within the City of Yarra, two new park projects are to be funded by the Yarra City Council.

The Local Parks Program, announced in 2019 by the Victorian Government, was designed in an attempt to create more open space within Melbourne’s denser suburbs. In May this year, funding was announced for the development of 25 new parks, including two park locations in Collingwood. This decision greatly improves liveability for Yarra residents.

The two locations in mind include a new park on Otter Street and plans to extend the Cambridge Street Reserve. In order to extend the Cambridge Street Reserve, changes to the road will need to be made and parking reallocated. Creating a pocket park in Otter Street will similarly require road closures in order to free up space.

The Yarra City Council intends to give residents and business owners an opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas on how the space can best be designed in the hope of preventing any pitfalls or problems in the future. Graphic design is often used in the creation of proposals for developments like this.

Any changes are subject to the approval process and the council welcomes feedback and questions, which can be submitted on the Yarra City Council website.
