Extra funding extends music festival programme
The music festival known as Leaps and Bounds + BEYOND, which attracts audiences from Abbotsford and across Yarra City, is being extended.
A boost in funds from the Victorian Government has enabled the festival's extension which will see it held for a full month until 24 July, 2022.
The major celebration of music, which is traditionally advertised through a banner printing campaign across the city, brings with it a wide array of special events and live music, presented at some of the city's top venues and unique settings.
A City of Yarra spokersperson said + BEYOND is a programme that focuses on instrumental artists who work in classical, contemporary and experimental repertoire and showcases Torres Strait Islander, Aboriginal, African as well as LGBTIQ+ musicians.
Deborah Cheetham AO, a top opera singer, will provide the extended programme's centrepiece performance together with Byron Scullin and Thomas Supple. This will provide a unique opportunity for audiences to immerse themselves in contemporary Aboriginal culture.
In addition, +BEYOND highlights will include Rhythm and Line, Afroshpere, Blackout Experience, Liquid Architecture: Ritual Community Music, Homophonic, and Esemble Dutala.
The country's first Torres Straight Island and Aboriginal chamber ensemble, Ensemble Dutala is led by violist and conductor Aaron Wyatt. The ensemble is set to enjoy a residency of two months at the local Fitzroy Town Hall, which will culminate with a live performance. The full programme, to run from 24 June to 24 July, 2022 can be found on the Leaps and Bounds Music Festival website.
