Fans of dance in the Abbotsford area can strut their stuff to music from the Melbourne Colonial Dancers Band as the musicians prepare to delight with dance music from the 1630s to the 1930s, and everything in between. Local events to tempt enthusiasts often use bold graphics as part of eye-catching poster printing.
Dancers and dance enthusiasts can come along and join in the various eras of dance that will be walked and talked through. The audience can expect to see and participate in dances from Stuart and Renaissance times, the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras and music from the Great Wars. All are welcome, either with a partner, in a group or as a solo fan. Costumes are fun, but are not a pre-requisite. Dances that may be included are the waltz, the quick-step and processional dances.
The Melbourne Colonial Dancers Band was set up in 1974 to encourage the rich Australian heritage of social colonial dancing, where dancers come together to enjoy set dances with prescribed moves. Dance types included under this banner are Australian Colonial, Old Time, Contemporary Bush, Anglo-Celtic and New England.
The Melbourne Colonial Dancers June Ball – Dancing Through Time event takes place on Saturday, June 24, from 8pm until midnight. The location is the Collingwood Town Hall, 140 Hoddle Street, Abbotsford VIC 3067. Tickets cost from $23. Attendees are encouraged to bring a plate of sharing food.
