Convent showcases work of contemporary print artist

Confucius once said, ‘Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.’

This thought Forms the basis of an exhibition at the Abbotsford Convent’s c3 contemporary art space called ‘Tropicalspasmo: Letters from the Orient.’

The exhibition is ‘a Print installation depicting the complete rejection of post-colonial discourse in favour of Pina Colada dysmorphia.’

"The work presented in Tropicalspasmo: Letters from the Orient, is the result of a 2-month in residency program undertaken by Hobart based printmaker Olivia Hittmann in Beijing. This period in China has evidently bolstered Hittmann’s unremitting desire to parody outdated ideas such as Post Colonialism and orientalism."

Hittmann has an, ‘obsession with printed paraphernalia’ and the exhibition includes poster printing using screen-printing and collage techniques.

The c3 contemporary art space is a key element of the Abbotsford Convent’s arts, cultural and learning precinct. The c3 space is committed to showcasing the work of emerging and established visual artists. The c3 space also provides ‘professional opportunities and support to artists at all stages of their careers.’

The art space has a ground level entrance which faces the Yarra River and the Convent arts precinct is visited by more than 25, 000 visitors every month who come to the Convent for markets, workshops, classes, exhibitions, festivals and events.

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 23 November - Sunday 11 December and the gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am - 5pm.
