Convent gets creative

Abbotsford residents have the chance to explore the local creative community this weekend with the annual Abbotsford Convent Open Day.

The open day, now in its eighth year, is a chance for people to find out more about what happens at the convent and some of the people who work there. The convent provides studio space to several authors who have been published by Print companies, artists, and natural health practitioners.

As well as being able to visit the artists’ studios, there will also be a number of events on during the open day. This year, the programme features creative arts workshops, including singing, dancing, and cooking, and a special schedule of events for children who can make their own Books and puppets, build with Lego, and visit the mobile zoo.

Authors who are based at the convent will share some of their favourite readings, while there will be art exhibitions, drama, and music performances.

For those more interested in the history of the convent, there will be guided tours around the buildings and talks about its previous uses, including as a base for the indigenous Kulin people and the Good Shepherd Sisters.

Food will be provided in a pop-up cafe serving rolls of roast pig and gypsy pear cider, and the convent bakery will serve wood-fired pizzas and give demonstrations on how to make cinnamon donuts throughout the day.

This year’s open day is this Sunday, November 11, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, visit the Convent’s website.
