The Melbourne Observatory is 150 years old this year and is holding a range of activities to celebrate the occasion later this week.
Visitors interested in the workings of the observatory and its equipment might like to take a guided tour that includes sky viewings through the historic telescopes. Guests will enjoy the talks scheduled throughout the evening, covering the history of the observatory and the great Melbourne telescope.
Dr Richard Gillespie from Museum Victoria will also be at the event and will be signing Copies of his book about the telescope and its development.
Children will no doubt want to try the face painting to become an alien or maybe even a planet for the evening, and will also get to have a go at making their own telescope or a star hat. The activities will be complemented by musical entertainment and a group of stilt walkers.
Modern telescopes on the lawn mean visitors from Abbotsford can try to spot stars or planets for themselves if the weather is suitable.
The evening will include two formal events: a commemorative plaque being unveiled in front of the Governor of Victoria, His Excellency the Honourable Alex Chernov AC QC, and a re-enactment of the time when the observatory was founded.
Printing services may have been used to create a range of souvenirs for the event, with plenty of mementos on sale in the Garden Shop, and the Observatory Café will also be open for drinks and snacks.
The anniversary events take place on Saturday November 23 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Entry is free.
