Benefit of local shops highlighted in Victoria

The residents of Victoria are being urged to use their local shops as part of a special Support Small Business Day later this month.

The event, which is organised by the state government, is designed to encourage people to help local businesses, get to know their owners and discover the joy of shopping and eating at smaller retailers rather than big chains.

Many businesses will be offering special deals or hosting events on the day. Shoppers who register on the Support Small Business Day website also stand the chance to win pre-paid gift cards which can be spent with the companies taking part.

Abbotsford residents will find several local businesses opening up for the occasion, including the Shizuku Japanese restaurant, Leethal Fashion Accessories in Collingwood and Books for Cooks, an independent recipe book shop in Fitzroy.

To be part of the event, businesses must have a physical shop front in Victoria and be trading at the time, employ less than 20 people and come under a sector such as retail or hospitality. A pop-up shop can be set up by those who would not usually have a physical shop.

Poster printing and flyer printing are great low-cost ways to advertise a company locally. Participating companies will also be given branded items to help promote the day and entrepreneurs can access advice on starting and growing a small business.

Support Small Business Day takes place on Saturday October 19. For more information and a list of participating businesses, visit the event's official website.
