Ashes urn on show at State Library

Cricket enthusiasts in Clifton Hill are within 5 kilometres of the famous Ashes urn, which is currently on display at Victoria’s State Library.

During the past 137 years, the original Ashes urn has only visited Australia three times. The iconic urn sits next to armour worn by Ned Kelly, plus scores of other city treasures as part of the free Velvet, Iron, Ashes exhibition.

London’s Marylebone Cricket Club has made the urn’s visit to Australia possible, loaning it exclusively to feature in the interactive exhibition, which reveals surprising connections as they relate to some of the state’s greatest stories, which include the Ashes series birth.

Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley said visitors will be pleasantly surprised at the connections revealed. He said the stories will take visitors from a perfume jar, mock funeral notice, and cricket match among family members in Sunbury, to learning how about the Ashes urn and how it is connected to Freddo Frog, the Yallourn power station, Ned Kelly and Nappie Wash.

Exhibitions such as this are often advertised via brochure printing campaigns, with Brochures detailing information about each aspect of the exhibition for visitors to read as they explore.

Foley said the exhibition, which will run until February 23, provides a rare opportunity for cricket lovers to see the iconic Ashes urn first hand.
