Film fans in the Salisbury South area can soon attend a festival of films with an international flavour, as in November there will be an event involving the screening of seven award-winning films.
The year 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the Ghan International Film Festival Australia (GIFFA). The initiative was started by Afghan-Australian filmmaker Fahim Hashimy, and has now stretched to a six-day event across Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.
The aim is to support Afghan cinema by showcasing courageous and creative stories of love, survival and resilience, preserving culture now that the Afghan Film Institute no longer exists.
Connection between Australians and Afghans began in the 1860s with the influx of Afghan Cameleers, and their presence both informs and enriches Australian life through storytelling, music and food.
Films on the night might include Shot the Voice of Freedom, which was made on a mobile phone, and an animated film, The Night Doctrine, which was made by an Afghan female journalist living in New York.
Colourful poster printing is one way in that cinematic releases might be advertised within a community.
The 10th Ghan International Film Festival Australia will be taking place at HOYTS Salisbury, which can be found on the corner of James and Gawler Street in Salisbury South on Sunday, 2 November, from 6 pm until 9 pm.
Tickets cost $18, and the event is suitable for those aged 16 and above. All the proceeds from ticket sales go towards helping support and benefit women and children in areas of conflict.
