The luck of the Irish for McGuinness & Co

Popular Mooloolaba band McGuinness & Co have been plucked from obscurity by Queensland’s richest man, Clive Palmer, as part of his plan to create a replica Titanic. The band will be performing for up to 500 guests and dignitaries, including descendants of Titanic passengers. It is a big step-up for the group, who usually perform for a small but devoted fan base at O’Malleys Irish Bar.

Mr Palmer’s initial launch dinner will be held in New York on February 26, before he and the band jet off to London for a prestigious black-tie event on March 2. Part of the festivity will be an 11-course dinner, in keeping with that served on-board the Titanic in 1912.

Dave Mannion, guitarist in the band, has even written a new song for the occasion, called The Spirit. He remarked about the upcoming tour:

“It’s excellent and very exciting. It’s a great opportunity more than anything.”

Mr Palmer expects the Titanic 11 to embark on a voyage to New York from Southampton in 2016.

Titanic 11 will be the same length as the original ship, but several metres wider. The cabins and public rooms upward of D deck will be identical to the original ship. The building will also focus heavily on safety, with a number of lifeboats included.

According to Palmer, there is already huge interest from people wanting to secure a booking on the maiden voyage. McGuiness & Co could make use of brochure printers to ensure the band’s information is on hand to distribute to the ship’s passengers.
